If you work in transport, logistics or warehousing and deal with dangerous goods, you’ve probably heard both terms — Dangerous Goods Licence and Dangerous Goods Awareness training. They sound similar. They’re not the same thing, and getting this wrong can leave you non-compliant, or over-paying for training you didn’t need.
This guide sets out exactly what each qualification covers, who legally needs it, and how to work out which one applies to your role.
The Short Answer
A Dangerous Goods Driver Licence (TLILIC0001) is a legal requirement issued by the NSW EPA — mandatory for anyone driving a vehicle that carries placardable quantities of dangerous goods by road.
Dangerous Goods Awareness training is for everyone else who works near, handles or manages dangerous goods but isn’t driving a placarded vehicle. It’s not a government licence — it’s industry training that builds competency and supports your WHS obligations.
What Is a Dangerous Goods Driver Licence?
The Dangerous Goods Driver Licence — formally the unit of competency TLILIC0001 Licence to transport dangerous goods by road — is a NSW EPA-administered licence. It is a legal document, not just a certificate.
You must hold this licence if you drive a vehicle carrying dangerous goods at or above the placardable quantity threshold set by the Australian Dangerous Goods Code (ADG Code). The placard threshold varies by class — for Class 3 flammable liquids (petrol, diesel), it’s generally 1,000 litres.
Who Needs a DG Driver Licence?
- Fuel tanker drivers (petrol, diesel, LPG)
- Chemical tanker operators
- Drivers transporting bulk gases, corrosives, oxidisers or toxic substances at placard loads
- Anyone driving a placarded vehicle by road in NSW
What Does the Licence Cover?
- ADG Code requirements and placard obligations
- DG classes, packing groups and hazard identification
- Consignment documentation and emergency procedures
- Safe loading, securing and unloading
- Emergency response — spills, leaks, fires
How Is It Issued?
After completing the accredited 2-day TLILIC0001 course with Kells Safety Centre, your EPA licence application is submitted and processed on your behalf. The licence is issued directly by the NSW EPA. The $618 course fee includes EPA processing fees — there’s no separate paperwork for you to manage.
What Is Dangerous Goods Awareness Training?
Dangerous Goods Awareness training is industry-level competency training for workers who are in proximity to dangerous goods — but who aren’t driving placarded vehicles. It’s not a government licence. It’s structured training that satisfies your obligations under Work Health and Safety legislation and the ADG Code for non-driver roles.
Who Needs DG Awareness Training?
- Warehouse and depot staff who store or handle dangerous goods
- Logistics coordinators and freight forwarders
- Compliance and safety officers
- Admin staff who process DG documentation
- Supervisors overseeing DG operations
- Workers in proximity to DG who need to understand hazard identification and emergency response
What Does Awareness Training Cover?
- What dangerous goods are and how they’re classified
- Hazard identification and reading placards and labels
- Storage and segregation requirements
- Emergency procedures and incident response
- Relevant ADG Code and WHS obligations for non-drivers

Can You Hold Both?
Absolutely — and in some workplaces, this makes sense. A driver who holds a DG Licence and also supervises warehouse staff may benefit from the broader awareness context. However, the DG Licence already covers the core competencies — awareness training is not a prerequisite for the licence course and is not required in addition to it.
What About Storing and Handling Dangerous Goods?
If your role is specifically in warehouse storage, depot operations or handling — rather than transport — you may need to look at our Store and Handle Dangerous Goods course. This covers storage segregation, spill management, depot safety and compliance obligations for fixed-site DG operations, and is distinct from both the DG Licence and DG Awareness pathways.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a DG licence if I occasionally drive a vehicle with small amounts of dangerous goods?
Only if the load reaches or exceeds the placardable quantity threshold under the ADG Code. Small sub-threshold quantities — like a tradie carrying fuel in a jerry can — don’t trigger the licence requirement. If you’re unsure, check with the NSW EPA or complete a DG Awareness course to understand where your obligations sit.
Is DG Awareness training the same as a DG Licence?
No. A DG Licence (TLILIC0001) is a government-issued NSW EPA licence required for drivers of placarded vehicles. DG Awareness training is industry competency training for non-driver roles. One cannot substitute for the other.
How long does each take?
The DG Driver Licence course runs for 2 full days (7:15am–3:30pm) at Wetherill Park or Wollongong. DG Awareness training is typically half a day to one day depending on delivery format.
Is DG Awareness training required by law?
While DG Awareness training is not mandated as a specific licence, employers have obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act (NSW) to ensure workers handling or exposed to dangerous goods have appropriate training and competency. DG Awareness training directly satisfies that obligation.
Who delivers these courses in NSW?
Both the Dangerous Goods Licence course (TLILIC0001) and Dangerous Goods Awareness training are delivered by Kells Safety Centre — a registered RTO (RTO ID 91528) operating from Wetherill Park and Wollongong. View our current course schedule.
